About

I am Vera Sels, art therapist and doula.

Vera Sels, art therapist and doula

I support women with personal care through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I organise women’s circles that offer a safe place to experience their creative power and value within a community.

I believe stories and creative practice can guide us on the path towards self-knowledge. These are some of the tools I use to accompany my clients and group members.

After studying History and Cultural Anthropology, I worked as a museum educator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. There, I experienced how profoundly art can affect our emotional and mental wellbeing.

Giving birth to my two children brought me closer to the questions of the perinatal period and led me to doula training with Emőke Békés.

“We walk together, at your own rhythm.”

Frequently asked questions

Questions families often ask

What does a doula do during birth?

+

A doula offers continuous emotional, physical and informational support: staying present, helping you work with pain and tension, helping you think through your options, and supporting your partner too. Medical care stays with your doctor or midwife, and the doula works alongside them.

When should I look for a doula?

+

Any time, though most families reach out in the second trimester. For birth support it helps to have time for two or three consultations beforehand. For postpartum support you are welcome to write even after your baby has arrived.

Which parts of Budapest do you cover?

+

I work in Budapest and the surrounding area. The first consultation can also be held online; after that we meet in person. For birth support I join you at home or at the hospital of your choice.

Which languages do you speak?

+

English, Hungarian, German and Dutch, so international families living in Budapest can be supported in a language close to home.

How much does support cost?

+

Book a time, and based on the needs we talk through at the first consultation I will put together a personal quote. Consultations, massage and postpartum support are charged by the hour, while birth support is quoted as one overall fee. Besides my personal presence and support during your birth, that fee includes:

  • continuous availability in the three weeks before and the two weeks after your due date (during this time you can reach me by phone day and night, I join your birth within 2 hours of your call, I stay within 60 km of the birth place, I do not drink alcohol, etc.);
  • the support of a jointly chosen backup doula, whom you can meet in advance and who can step in if needed, so that a doula is present at your birth;
  • the cost of the pain-management tools I use — essential oils, massage oils, a water heater, compresses, a TENS/EMS machine;
  • parking fees at or near the hospital and any other expenses on my side.

What is art therapy and how does it relate to doula care?

+

In art therapy, creating helps you understand and process feelings, and no drawing skill is needed. As a complex art therapist I bring this perspective into perinatal care and women's circles.
